Previous selections include: The "God" Part of the Brain: A Scientific Interpretation of Human Spirituality and God, by Matthew Alper; Living Judaism: The Complete Guide to Jewish Belief, Tradition, and Practice by Wayne D. Dosic; The World's Religions by Huston Smith, a very good introduction to the major religions; The God We Never Knew: Beyond Dogmatic Religion to a More Authentic Contemporary Faith by Marcus J. Borg, which presents a progressive, panentheistic approach to Christianity; When God Was a Woman by Merlin Stone, about ancient goddess religion and how it was supplanted by patriarchal monotheism; A History of God: The 4,000-Year Quest of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, by Karen Armstrong, a fascinating examination of the development of monotheism; Why Religion Matters: The Fate of the Human Spirit in an Age of Disbelief, by Huston Smith, which argues for a return to a pre-modern world view, and An Introduction to Buddhism: Teachings, History and Practices by Peter Harvey, The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers, based on the PBS series, The Gospel According to Jesus: A New Translation and Guide to His Essential Teachings for Believers and Unbelievers, by Stephen Mitchell, which attempts to sort out the historic Jesus from the myth, and The Battle for God: A History of Fundamentalism by Karen Armstrong.
Donate a HymnalThe fellowship recently voted to acquire UU hymnals so that we can better celebrate life and our living tradition. Half of the hymnals will be purchased from our budget, but we need help to make up the other half. You may purchase a copy of Singing: The Living Tradition from Amazon.com or from the UUA Bookstore. If you wish, we will place a bookplate in your volume to commemorate your gift or memorialize a loved one. For more info, contact Lora.
We have a small library of books, pamphlets, and other materials available for lending. Take a look at the two bookcases in the meeting room at the Temple. If you have any books you think will be of interest to UUs, please donate them by bringing them to one of our meetings.
